This red-brown species is characterized especially by the fibrillose veil remnants on the the stem leaving girdle like zones. The cap is often rather dry.

It is associated with beech (Fagus), whereas the close relative - C. pseudovulpinus - is associated with hornbeam (Carpinus), and has a peculiar cheese-like smell.
