An Oak-associated species with violaceous gills, yellow-brown cap,
and characteristic brownish veil girdles on the stipe.
C. varius is quite alike but has less
distinct veil girdles, and grows in coniferous forests.
C. caligatus and C.
maculosus is also associated with Oak, but both have very abundant
veil on the cap, leaving it +/- fibrillose, tomentose or even scaly.
Both species have a more attanuate stipe.
