This species is characterized by the quite perculiar colours of the cap, which is reminding of Gomphideus glutinosus.

Other resembling species of sect. Phlegmacioides (Variecolores) are usually more robust and produces a yellow reaction with bases.

The species is rare and grows in oligotrophic-eutrophic picea forests with a long continuity. It is mainly known from Fennoscandia.
