This species is very often dry on the pileus. It shows varying intensities of blue colour. Young specimens are often very blue, whereas older often have faded to brown. It has a yellow alcaline reaction.

It can be confused with C. variecolor, which however has a strong earthlike smell, and C. balteatocumatilis, which has grey gills
