This species has very compact fruitbodies. The cap is initialy bluish, but quickly turns brownish. It often grows in open areas like gardens and parks.

It may remind of other compact species with clavate but non-bulbose stipe - especially C. largus and C. variecolor, from which it is separated by its pale grey gills.
